FINANCIAL INCLUSION AND POVERTY IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined the effect of financial inclusion on poverty alleviation in Nigeria
from 1982 to 2020. It highlights the importance of financial inclusion as a tool to combat
poverty, emphasizing the significant impact of poor financial inclusion on the inability
of the poor to access financial services, thereby exacerbating poverty levels. The study
utilized data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN, 2022) statistical bulletin and the
World Development Indicators (World Bank, 2022). The study employed descriptive
statistics, correlation analysis, unit root tests (Augmented Dickey Fuller and Phillipsperron tests), and the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to analyze the
data and assess the relationship between financial inclusion and poverty. The findings
revealed both short-term and long-term negative relationships between financial
inclusion and poverty in Nigeria. Specifically, variables such as the number of
commercial bank branches, loans by rural bank branches, and credits to the private
sector were found to have a negative association with poverty. Conversely, lending rates
were positively correlated with poverty levels. Additionally, while credits to the private
sector and loans by rural bank branches were statistically insignificant, the number of
commercial bank branches showed significance at a 5% level. Based on the findings, the
study recommended several policy measures to enhance financial inclusion and alleviate
poverty in Nigeria. These recommendations include expanding the Small and Medium
Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF), reducing lending rates, and lowering the
cost of delivering financial services to improve access to financial services for the poor.

LIQUIDITY MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The study empirically investigates the impact of liquidity management on financial
performance of deposit money bank in Nigeria using time series data from 2011 to 2020.
The study analyses the data with the aid of E-view statistical package for descriptive and
correlation analysis and STATA 11 after testing for the best estimator from pool OLS,
fixed effect and random effect estimator based on Breusch and Pagan LM test, F-test
and Hausman test. Deposit to asset ratio has negative but statistically insignificant
relationship with returns on assets of DMBs in Nigeria since the P-value of 7.9% is
greater than 5% significant level. Cash reserve ratio has positive but statistically
insignificant relationship with returns on equity of DMBs in Nigeria since P value of
22.1% is greater than 5% significant level. Loan deposit ratio has negative but
statistically insignificant relationship with net interest margin of deposit banks in
Nigeria since P value of 91.8% is less than 5% significant level. The study recommends
that CBN should strive to improve their regulatory capacity over all DMBs in Nigeria.
Special financial court should be established by the government to prosecute serial loan
defaulters. Regular training and retraining couple with professional development of staff
should be encouraged by the board and management of the bank and CBN. CBN should
also set a limit to the level the staff of DMBs can attain without requisite professional
and academic qualifications.

IMPACT OF FISCAL DECENTRALIZATION ON THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF KADUNA STATE.
Abstract
The economic development of local governments in Nigeria faces several challenges,
including revenue allocation, lack of autonomy, and constant interference by the State
Government. There is a widespread belief that Fiscal Decentralization (FD) is the
remedy to these challenges, and this study used panel data from 2006 to 2021 to examine
the effect of fiscal decentralization on economic growth in the 23 local government areas
of Kaduna state. Fiscal Decentralization between Kaduna state and each local
government was measured using four indicators, namely, revenue indicator (RI),
expenditure indicator (EI), autonomy indicator (AI) and capital indicator (CI). Except
for the expenditure indicator, the study's findings indicate that all measures of fiscal
decentralization are positively and significantly correlated with economic growth.
Further findings revealed that a possible explanation for why the expenditure indicator
is negatively related to economic growth is that Local Governments are often used as
administrative spending units, where spending decisions reflect the state government’s
policies regardless of the immediate needs of the local government area in question.
Based on the findings of this research, it is recommended that Kaduna state government
should promote true fiscal decentralization by assigning more fiscal responsibilities to
Local governments in order to bring about faster economic growth in all regions of the
state.

PUBLIC DEBT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of public debt on economic growth in Nigeria,
employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model of cointegration and
analysing annual time series data spanning from 1980 to 2022. The empirical findings
reveal that in the long run, external debt exerts a positive and significant impact on
economic growth. This suggests that external debt holds substantial economic potential
to drive growth in Nigeria throughout the analysed period. However, debt service
payments have a significant adverse effect on growth, both in the long run and the short
run. Consequently, the study recommends that the government should ensure borrowed
external funds are allocated to productive investments to achieve its desired objectives.
Specifically, Projects financed through government borrowing should undergo thorough
assessment, evaluating their technical feasibility, financial viability, and economic
desirability before committing funds, borrowing should be allocated towards financing
productive infrastructure projects and initiatives that enhance productivity, thereby
potentially offsetting the costs associated with servicing the debt

GREEN ECONOMY AND FISCAL POLICY IN DEVELOPING ECONOMY: EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA
Abstract
The study used data from Nigeria to investigate how the green economy affects fiscal
policy in developing economies. Specific objectives are to assess the impact of green
transportation on job development in developing economies: Evidence from Nigeria and
investigate the relationship between renewable energy and employment creation. For
the study, a research design was used. The study structured questionnaire as its primary
data source. The questionnaire was created using a five-point Likert scale. Tables, chisquare and basic percentages, were used to show and analyze the acquired data. The
study's findings show that, at the 5% level of significance, renewable energy has a
considerable impact on the creation of jobs in emerging economies. Nigeria provides
evidence for this, with a mean score of 3.88, a standard deviation of.0319, a χ2 of 18.07,
and a P-value of 0.025. Additionally, there is evidence from Nigeria that shows a
significant impact of green transportation on job creation in developing economies
[Mean = 3.811; Std. Dev =.916; χ2 = 12.44; p-value = 0.031]. The study reveals that
the green economy significantly improves fiscal policy in emerging nations like Nigeria.
Given that the development of jobs in developing nations may not be exclusively driven
by renewable energy and environmentally friendly transportation, the study urged looking into a variety of employment strategies. Investments in areas critical to economic
diversification, such as agribusiness and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs),
could have a more immediate and direct effect on employment and should be taken into
consideration by policymakers.

FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT, JUDICIAL CORRUPTION, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA
Abstract
This paper assesses the impact of financial development, institutions, and judicial
corruption, on economic growth as well as causality among the variables in Nigeria
over the period of 1980 to 2016 using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Model
and Granger Causality Test. The former takes care of both long-run and short-run
dynamic effects of financial development, institutions, and judicial corruption as they
affect economic growth while the latter captures the flow of causality among the
variables. The ARDL Bound test result reveals existence of cointegration among the
variables. The short-run result shows that judicial corruption is negatively and
significantly related to economic growth while in the long-run, a positive but
insignificant relationship exists. It also reveals that exchange institutions have
significant negative relationship with economic growth. However, the results of Granger
causality test showed that there is unidirectional causality running from judicial
corruption to economic growth. In all, the study concludes that justice delayed is growth
denied. The study therefore recommends that the institution of justice be reformed, civil
litigations be discharged on time and judicial independence be restored accordingly.

VALUE RELEVANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING BY NON-FINANCIAL LISTED FIRMS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) issued Sustainability Reporting Guidelines in
2018 which requires that listed firms provide sustainability report, in their annual
reports or as a standalone report, from 2019. The purpose is to provide additional
information to assist investors in investment decisions. This study investigated the value
relevance of sustainability reporting by non-financial listed firms on NGX from 2016 to
2020. All the 97 non-financial listed firms on NGX form the population for the study and
sample consists of 30 most capitalised firms, proportionally selected from the 7 sectors
of the non-financial firms on NGX. Content analysis and panel least square was used as
methods of data analysis. Results show that sustainability reporting quantity disclosure
has an insignificant negative effect (-0.01) on share price, while sustainability quality
disclosure has an insignificant positive effect (0.07) on share price. It was recommended
that the regulatory authorities, the Nigerian Financial Reporting Council and the NGX
in addition to making sustainability reporting mandatory should enforce the assurance
of the report by qualified professionals.

ATTITUDE OF UNDERGRADUATE MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS OF BINGHAM UNIVERSITY TOWARDS JOURNALISM AS A CAREER
Abstract
Research has shown that many mass communication graduates have been produced
every year in Nigeria. However, only a few of them venture into journalism as a career.
Using a quantitative approach, the researcher examined the attitude of undergraduate
mass communication students of Bingham University, Nigeria, towards journalism as a
career. The population of the study consists of 300 registered 100 to 400 level students
in the Department of Mass Communication. Census method was adopted to sample the
perception of the respondents towards journalism as a career. Online questionnaire via
Google form was employed for data collection and analysis. The data were analyzed and
presented in tables and bar chart. Hinged on the Perception Theory, findings revealed
that majority (61.2%) of the participants have positive attitude towards journalism as a
career. However, further finding shows that the risky and hazardous nature of
journalism profession in Nigeria; such as killing, kidnapping, assault and discrimination
against journalists, poor remuneration among others, immensely influenced the decision
of some students to venture into other professions or careers rather than journalism after
graduation. Based on the findings, the study recommended that media organizations
and the Nigerian government should ensure adequate security for journalists on the line
of duty, provide attractive working conditions such as appropriate salaries and
allowances as well as job security and protection of the life of journalists so as to make
journalism profession more attractive to the teeming young graduates of mass
communication in Nigeria.

ASSESSING THE INFLUENCE OF ARCHITECTURAL TEACHING METHODS ON ADVANCING SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICES
Abstract
This study investigated the role of architectural education in Nigeria in preparing
professionals for sustainable architectural practice, with a particular focus on
advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). It assessed the relationship
between the teaching methods employed in delivery of the architecture curriculum of
universities and sustainable architectural practice among professionals. Using
positivism as the philosophical stance, a quantitative approach was taken. Regression
analysis was employed to analyse teaching methods and its impact on architects'
professional practice. Findings revealed that educators who place emphasis on meeting
deadlines, employed teaching methods that are flexible enough to adapt to changing
needs, and adopting the practice of professional ethics in their teaching delivery have
the highest positive influence on future architectural practice of their students. On the
flip side, educators who accepted submission from students that were carelessly put
together, and capitalise on relationships with their students (such as favouritism) tend
to negatively affect the future architectural practice of their students. This research also
revealed the crucial impact of architectural education approaches on advancing
sustainable architectural practices in Nigeria, aligning with the objectives of SDG 4. It
underscores the importance of teaching methods and recommends constant updates of
teaching methods at the faculty level so as to have products who have a highly
sustainable practice.
